Get ready to dive into one of the most iconic traditions of Venetian culture: the art of mask making. Guided by one of our passionate craftsmen, you will have the opportunity to make a mask of your own in one of the most renowned mask & costume ateliers in Venice. This classic Mask Workshop is made up of a group of artists with a passion for one of Venice’s most emblematic traditions where they love to create professionally produced masks and Carnival costumes for any glamorous occasion, from extravagant parties to a trip to the theatre.
You will be dazzled by the vibrant colours and stunning masks which our artisans create on a daily basis. This is the perfect place to make a mask of your own if you are serious about creating your own splendid masterpiece with the help of our expert mask artists.

The art of mask making
Whether you’re inspired by animals, colours, or the multicultural Venetian architecture, we leave it to you to decide what sort of character you would like to create.
Be inspired by the thousands of masks which line the walls of this traditional establishment and see the vast selection of faces that people choose to wear every day. You’ll see such iconic faces as the Bauta mask, which Casanova famously wore over 200 years ago, and the more simply designed Columbine, Neutra and Pierrots. Or, if you are a fan of the grotesque, Pulcinellas, Harlequins, and Doctors of the Plague might be more to your taste. Your expert teacher will explain to you the histories of the different crafts and techniques of each design and will explain to you the different characters that each individual mask represents.

Ancient techniques for mask making were taken from the theatre, and mask makers used everything from silver, gold and brass, to precious fabrics, ancient varnish, and Swarovski crystals to create their stunning results. Unfortunately, these won’t all be available for you on the day!

Time to get stuck in!
Then comes the hands-on part of the tour, where you will be able to create your own mask for yourself. Take inspiration from what you’ve seen already or, for the artistic types, try to create something completely new. Mask making is one of the freest art forms in the world, as you not only control how you decorate them, but also the shape of the mask itself.
