In the Middle Ages, it became a church and as a result was protected from destruction. You must see it inside because only once inside can you fully appreciate the true scale and beauty of this ancient building. It is also the burial place of one of Rome’s most famous artists, Raphael. Go find him there!

Its shape is due to the fact that it used to be an ancient stadium, which housed over 30,000 spectators who came to see chariot racing and even naval battles! In fact, you can see a part of this ancient arena underneath the piazza. In earlier times, this square was flooded in August so people could splash around to beat the summer heat. We booked a private tour Rome’s famous squares and fountains and I was a little worried that my 13 year old daughter would be bored for almost 3 hours but our guide was amazing and my daughter loved her, she made the afternoon fun and interesting and I would definitely recommend booking Rome 4 Kids tours.
We spent the morning in Rome with our guide touring Piazza di Spagna, Fontana di Trevi and Piazza Navona. She was patient, fun and informative for our three boys (ages 10, 13 and 18). She brought along tons of books and pictures to help the boys imagine what Rome might have been like in times past and even had suggestions for us for the rest of our stay. She answered every question we had and told tons of cool stories about what we were seeing. We couldn’t have had a better time!
