In the Middle Ages, it became a church and as a result was protected from destruction. Its shape is due to the fact that it used to be an ancient stadium, which housed over 30,000 spectators who came to see chariot racing and even naval battles! In fact, you can see a part of this ancient arena underneath the piazza. In earlier times, this square was flooded in August so people could splash around to beat the summer heat.
