“Remember, remember! The fifth of November, The Gunpowder treason and plot; I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot!”
This famous British folk song speaks of one of the most famous moments in the history of England. On a single night on the 5th November 1605, a group of anarchists decided to fill the houses of Parliament with gunpowder with the intension of killing the king himself, King James 1st . Ever since on the 5 th of November families all over England have celebrated this day with a bonfire which burns an effigy of Guy Fawkes.
This poem has taught English children about this momentous event for hundreds of years, but it is most famous for its association with Guy Fawkes. However, who exactly was Guy Fawkes? Did he act alone? What was he trying to do? These are questions that most people cannot answer. But, believe us, this story is far stranger, more sinister and more nefarious than a simple nursery rhyme can explain.
