Athens. The Greek capital was named after the Ancient goddess Athena. There is a very famous myth that says that Poseidon, the God of the Seas and Athena, The Goddess of Wisdom and War, were competing to be patrons for the city. Both divinities would have made gifts for the citizens and whoever made the best gift would be patron. Whereas Poseidon thought that the people would much rather prefer a water spring, Athena, with her wisdom, gave the Olive tree as a gift. Poseidon’s present was more appreciated by the men in the city, as they recognized the strongly pragmatical advantage, whilst the women preferred the tree, the city was named after the Goddess Athena.
